PathPoint is currently seeking a Direct Support Professional to join our Pathfinder day program in Chatsworth, CA. Direct Support Professionals work with adults with moderate to severe physical and developmental disabilities, using behavior support to increase a person's quality of life. Activities and curriculum in our program are designed to assist with three primary goals of behavior support: 1) identify the function of the behavior; 2) assist people in learning to express and meet his/her needs productively; and 3) support the positive capacity to tolerate frustration and self-manage behavior. The schedule for this position is Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm.
Provide a positive physical and social environment consistent with the preferences and expectations of individuals supported. Maximize each person's choices and ability to control his or her environment at all times.
Follow treatment and behavior support plans as written and give appropriate and timely feedback to plan writers regarding barriers and effectiveness.
Encourage positive behavior and recognize, reward, and celebrate the use of new skills and appropriate responses on a daily basis with individuals.
Recognize unique environmental triggers for challenging behavior and plan accordingly to avoid triggers, and support the person in an appropriate response to triggers. Recognize early signs of frustration or confusion and help individuals identify and self-manage frustration levels and communicate needs effectively.
Stay calm, focused, and supportive of the individual and his or her needs when engaging around challenging behavior. Deescalate challenging behavior by acting quickly to modify conditions (environmental, social, or others conditions) that may contribute to the behavior.
Follow documentation protocol for special incident reporting and contacts appropriate team member(s) or supervisor(s).
Participate in formal functional behavior assessment as requested.
Provide support to individuals in the areas of personal hygiene including feeding, lifting, transferring, toileting and range of motion.
Provide support with medication and maintain medication and health records. Ensure medication logs and receipts are updated.
High school diploma or GED is required. BA in Psychology or related field is highly desired.
Prior experience supporting/instructing individuals with physical, intellectual, or developmental disabilities and/or mental illness is preferred, but we are willing to train.
Physical strength/stature as the responsibilities of the position may require restraining a participant when their behavior is dangerous, in order to prevent them from harming themselves or others.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with participants, their family members, social workers, and others in a positive and constructive manner.
Strong computer skills to include MS Office, email and internet.
Must receive criminal record clearance through DOJ and pass TB screening and health screening.
Must have a valid driver's license, clean DMV record, and vehicle with registration and insurance.
Able to endure physical activities such as walking, standing, sitting, stooping, and lifting 30-40 pounds.
Compensation and Benefits
$14.50 per hour.
